A double-fronted townhouse in the heart of Mayfair Village, London W1, has come to market with a guide price of £49,500,000. Balfour House is being sold by estate agents OB Private, as reported by the Daily Mirror.
The house
Balfour House has seven bedrooms and is arranged over four floors. It has triple-aspect windows to the south, east and west, and a lift to every floor. The Daily Mirror reports that it has been through an extensive redevelopment.
The ground and first floors hold four formal reception rooms: a sitting room, dining room, drawing room and study. The dining room has French doors opening onto a private garden. The top floor has an open-plan family room of 200 square feet.
- The principal bedroom is on the second floor, with a dressing room and his-and-hers octagonal bathrooms.
- The third and fourth floors each have two bedroom suites, all with dual aspects.
- The kitchen sits below the ground-floor dining room, with a rear staircase to a servery kitchen next to the dining room.
- The rest of the lower ground floor is a self-contained staff flat with one bedroom, a bathroom, a sitting room, a utility room and storage.
The roof terrace
The standout feature is a 525 sq ft roof terrace with a 360 degree view of the London skyline.
Location
The house sits in an enclave between Hyde Park and Grosvenor Square. It is a hundred yards from the gardens of Mount Street, and close to Harry's Bar and the George private members' club.
History
Sir Jeremiah Colman, who built his family's Colman's Mustard into an international brand, once lived in the house. He lived from April 1859 to January 1942. After his death the building moved into commercial use, housing various businesses through the mid-20th century. In the early 1990s it was restored and converted back into a private home, and the same family still owns it.
Charlie Gibson, founder and managing director of OB Private, said: "Arguably the finest house in Mayfair Village, Balfour House is a grand, double-fronted townhouse combining exceptional character with rare features, including a spectacular roof terrace."
